Travel Morocco 2012: 10 days Atlas/Sahara/Atlantic...

I'll tell you a little more about it, but first want to make some comments, to give some advice,  so that  should you consider doing the same (or similar) you are prepared.

Travelling in Morocco demands a certain mind-set, especially if you are there for the first time.  Marrakech (usually your starting point) can be very overwhelming in both the positive and negative sense.  It is an effusion of sights, sounds, colours and smells.  It is exotic.  It is noisy and there is little air left to breathe given the excess of exhaust fumes from the mopeds that race through the smallest streets, missing you by centimetres.  Keep strictly to the right of the road in single file!!

The main square, Djemma El Fna, which is extolled in all travel journals, is indeed fascinating (although in high season you can get the feeling that it is tourists watching other tourists) but woe betide the orange juice – it looks so delicious, freshly pressed, but there is no running water on the square for washing the equipment ... I would advise you avoid at all costs.  On the other hand, eating at one of the many stalls in the evening is no problem, provided you eat only cooked food and drink bottled water.  This is fun.

My suggestion?  Two nights in Marrakech before you go off on tour, and three nights on return.  Choose a comfortable Riad which is an oasis of calm – most of them are like this and there is a very wide selection at a great variety of prices, ranging from €.55 per room per night to €.225 for supreme elegance and comfort (but this is not the top in price....!).

We chose €.55 this time and were more than happy, centrally located, a small roof terrace for breakfast or for 'chilling' in the sun, and delightful staff.  No, no pool, but how often have you found yourselves taking one with a pool and then not using it?

If you come back to the same Riad you can leave some of your luggage, any shopping you have done, or the sort of clothing you like to wear in Marrakech but will absolutely not need on your adventure tour. Porters with carts are easy to get, cost very little, and will take you to the Parking where you meet your guide/driver to set off for a tour of 9 – 10 days.  Yippee.

Now you are in good hands, don't need to think and plan any more, you can sit back and relax.
